The Republic of Korea, referred to as "South Korea", is located in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula in East Asia. It is surrounded by the sea on three sides. It borders the Yellow Sea to the west, the Korea Strait to the southeast, the Sea of Japan to the east, and is adjacent to North Korea across the Demilitarized Zone of the 38th Parallel to the north.

South Korea is a developed capitalist country and is a founding member of APEC, the World Trade Organization and the East Asia Summit.
